Maleny Seed Library
How the library began.
During the covid pandemic it quickly became difficult for avid gardeners across Australia to buy seed. This got people thinking, what if our community had their own seed bank? What if seed was freely available to everyone?
In early 2022, Soul approached Maleny Library and Sunshine Coast Council to start a community collection of seed in the local library. Working alongside Amanda Kennedy from Maleny Library the idea grew steadily and in 2023 the seed library came to fruition. The Maleny Seed Library currently supports collections at both Maleny and Kawana libraries. The beautiful wooden boxes for both the seed collections and seed donations were lovingly created by the Blackall Range Woodworking Group.
How the library works.
Members of Sunshine Coast Libraries can now swap and share seeds at the Maleny and Kawana branches. Just drop in your excess seeds to the donation boxes at either library branch and browse the seed collection while you’re there. Library members are allowed to take up to 4 packets a month. The seed library is supported by a dedicated network of local growers, producers and seed collectors who meet regularly to replenish the seed library stock.
Maybe your first packets from the seed library will help you grow into a super seed saver too!
